The ram’s horn (shofar) and pomegranates are common symbols associated with Rosh
Hashanah, the Jewish New Year representing awakening and righteousness.
02 October 2016
This evening will usher in Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year which heralds the beginning of the High Holy Days. It is a time of celebration and introspection culminating in repentance and atonement on the most holy day of Yom Kippur.
The human rights and Palestine solidarity organisation, BDS South Africa conveys its very best wishes to our Jewish comrades and supporters as well as to the larger South African Jewish community on this occasion of Rosh Hashanah.
We hope that this new year for the Jewish community be filled with peace, joy and justice. And, as in the Jewish tradition of eating apples and honey at this time, we also wish you fruitfullness and sweetness.
During these holy days, and in our troubled times, it is apt for all people to consider the great prophetic tradition which is a part of the Jewish faith that calls for speaking truth to power, establishing justice, working for the tikkun olam (healing of the world) and remembering the oppressed and disenfranchised in our feasts and prayers.
May our Jewish comrades and supporters find strength and joy as they recommit to justice and awaken to the shofar’s call.
