PRESS ALERT: Protest in Durban against Israeli Apartheid (2 June, 1pm)

31 May 2018

Members of the public and media are invited to the Palestine solidarity protest against Israeli Apartheid taking place this Saturday (2 June 2018) in Durban. The protest will start at 1pm at the corner of Dr RD Naidu and Alpine Road and will end at Overport Secondary School (Felix Dlamini Road). The protest will be preceded by a press conference at 12pm at the starting point (cnr Dr RD Naidu and Alpine Road).

The protest, organised under the banner of “People Against Oppression,” is supported by a range of civil society organisations, political parties, faith based groups, youth movements and human rights bodies, including: Refocus and Upliftment Foundation (RAUF), SA Jews for a Free Palestine (SAJFP), KZN Palestine Solidarity Forum, NEHAWU, SACP, COSATU, ANC, ANC Youth League, YCL SA, Ethekweni Outreach, RAUF Youth Team (RYT), KAIROS Southern Africa, MRN, ICRA, PAGAD, IPCI, PSA, SANZAF, National Coalition 4 Palestine (NC4P), Sunni Jamiatul Ulema South Africa (SJUSA), Heavenly Culture World Peace and Restoration of Light (HWPL), Multi Faith Forum, Solidarity Group for Peace and Justice in Sri Lanka, IIROSA, ILS, International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), SHAMSAAN, Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design (CFAD), Phoenix Crises Center, SACC, SAMNET, Caring Sisters Network (CSN), CTIEC, Truly Alliance (TA), the NFP and BDS South Africa.

Guest speakers who will address the protest include: Nelson Mandela’s grandson and member of Parliament, Chief Mandla Mandela; Reverend Ntuthuko Nkosi of the Lutheran Church; the National Coordinator of BDS South Africa, Muhammed Desai; Bishop Rubin Phillip of the Anglican Church; and, ANC REC Member as well Deputy Mayor of Durban, Councillor Fawzia Peer.

The protest will be calling for sanctions against Israel starting with the implementation of the ANC’s 54th National Conference Resolution for the immediate and unconditional downgrade of the SA Embassy in Israel to a liaison office until Israel respects international law.

The march forms part of nationwide actions following Israel’s recent massacre on the 14th of May 2018 that resulted in the killing of over 55 Palestinians including several children. Following the massacre, South Africa’s governing party, the ANC, called on South Africans to “rise up and treat Israel like the pariah that it is…as South Africans, we can and should know better…the ANC calls on all South Africans to demonstrate to the world that we regard the Israeli government and its armed forces as an outcast and blight on humanity.” (click here). The South African government responded to the massacre by withdrawing the SA Ambassador to Israel “until further notice”.
