PRESS ALERT: World’s youngest journalist (12 years) on South African Tour

11 July 2018

12-year-old Janna Jihad from Palestine, one of the youngest officially registered journalists in the world, is currently on tour in South Africa.

Jihad, who started her journalism at the age of 7, following the Israeli killing of her two family members, is in the country to participate in the Nelson Mandela centenary events; to engage with South African human rights organisations and youth platforms. Thus far she’s participated at events in KZN and met with South African personalities including former first lady Graca Machel, artist Simphiwe Dana, MetroFM’s DJ Fresh, politician Julius Malema, activist Kumi Naidoo and others.

She is accompanied by her mother, Nawal, an activist from the well-known Tamimi family of the Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh, where community members are routinely harassed and imprisoned; the majority of which are children. The most famous of these is 17 year old Ahed Tamimi (click here for video).

Janna, who has a global following, has been awarded internationally for her media role in covering the daily struggle of Palestinians living under Israeli military occupation.
