HOW AN ELEVEN YEAR OLD PALESTINIAN GIRL SPENT MOTHER’S DAY

18 May 2019

This is how an 11-year old Palestinian child, Alaa Abu Zeid, spent mothers day: lying next to her mothers grave, holding onto a bouquet of flowers.

Alaa’s 7-month pregnant mother, her brother and 8 other members of her extended family were all killed when Israel bombed their home. Alaa herself was also injured, the flesh of her right leg was completely torn off. The severity of her injury led to an operation where a portion of her left leg was removed and placed on her right. According to the nurses, beyond the physical pain she endured, when she was left alone, she would cry uncontrollably for her mother, so they never left her alone (click here).

Palestinians are not begging on their knees for hampers or handouts but standing on their feet, daily resisting Israel’s killings, occupation and apartheid. They are not victims pleading for charity – they are asking for our solidarity!

Sharing a post, liking a comment, retweeting and praying are all important. In addition, please also consider making a tax deductible donation to BDS SA and support the international movement in solidarity with the people of Palestine and their progressive Jewish Israeli allies.

The global boycott movement, of which BDS SA is a South African partner, has in the last decade become one of the most powerful international movements of our time (a UN report has documented how Israel lost 46% in Foreign Direct Investment due to BDS boycotts). The isolation of Israel, it is hoped, will force the Israeli regime to end its violence against the Palestinians and reach a just solution with the indigenous Palestinians – similar to how the 1980s sanctions movement contributed to the liberation of South Africa and forced the Apartheid regime to negotiate with the liberation movement that ushered in our democratic dispensation.
