Northern Cape 4 Palestine – Joint Media Release
Today will bring to an end a successful two-day Palestine program in the Northern Cape province of South Africa.
The program kicked off early on Thursday morning (19 November 2020) when activists and leadership from around Northern Cape, the Palestinian Ambassador to South AFrica and the Director of #Africa4Palestine arrived in Kimberley.
A high level meeting took place with the Premier of the Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul followed by a meeting between the visiting guests and the ANC, SACP, COSATU, SANCO and NEHAWU.
The group then held a lunch time program at the local Kimberley Islamic School where Palestine masks were distributed to school children, who also held a mini-concert in celebration of the Palestinian cause.
A dialogue was then held with religious leaders from Christian faith at the Northern Cape Theatre
In the evening the community of Kimberly held a public event where Deputy Minister of International relations and ANC NEC member, Comrade Alvin Botes, delivered the keynote address. Other prominent speakers included the Premier who addressed the public as the Chairperson of the ANC as well as the Deputy General Secretary of the SACP, cde Chris “Che” Mathlako, SACP PS cde Norman Shushu, NCUC’s Moulana Adam Feltman, Cosatu’s cde Orapeleng Moraladi and SANCO’s cde Solly Legodi. The event was well attended by young and old, attracting a diverse range of people from various political and religious backgrounds.
Amidst the mamouth challenges facing our country and indeed the province of Northern Cape, South Africans have shown that we can confront our challenges, lead in fighting for a better country and province whilst also providing solidarity to international struggles.
The Alliance leadership together with the Premier signed a framed poster with the world famous pledge by Mandela to Palestine. The framed poster together with a hand painted banner by the school children of Kimberly was handed to the Ambassador as a gift to be sent to Palestine.
Friday’s program included activities in Galashewe, a talk at lunch time as well as certain media engagements and meetings.
It is worth stating that agreement was reached for the practical strengthening of relations between the Northern Province government and that of Palestine. Certain developments will be announced in due course as they are being finalised.
All activities strictly adhered to Covid19 regulations and part of the program included the handing over of PPE to school children.
