Court orders theatre to screen Palestine film, a huge victory for the PSC

PRESS STATEMENT: South African court orders theatre to screen Palestine film, a huge victory for the PSC

The human rights and Palestine solidarity organization #Africa4Palestine warmly welcomes the decision by South Africa’s Equality Court ordering the well known Labia Theatre, to screen the Palestine film: “Roadmap To Apartheid”.

The court ruling comes nine years after Cape Town’s Labia Theatre refused to lease its premises to the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) for the showing of the award winning movie “Roadmap To Apartheid” which exposes Israel’s discriminatory policies against the Palestinians.

This is a massive victory for freedom of expression and for Palestine solidarity. We congratulate the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) and Right2Know for their sterling work on this matter. The PSC held protests, launched a successful boycott against the Labia theatre, it also took the issue to the South African Human Rights Commission and eventually to South Africa’s Equality Court.

We also acknowledge and appreciate the Legal Resources Center (LRC) and their work in maintaining, defending and promoting human rights. The LRC represented the PSC in this legal challenge.

We welcome the fact that the film will now be screen by the labia theatre but given that the labia thearter, in the course of this matter, showed its clear support for apartheid Israel we will therefore await direction from the PSC as to whether the boycott of the labia theatre will be lifted now that a court victory has been achieved.

This court case and decision reinforces the need for our judiciary to remain independent and has relevance particularly to the current issue with Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.
