Multi-party protest in Durban today

PRESS STATEMENT: Multi-party protest march in Durban later today

28 May 2021

A Free Palestine protest march will take place later today (Friday, 28  May, starting at 13h30) in Durban. The protest will start at Yusuf Dadoo Street and conclude with a rally at the Durban City Hall.

Of significance, today’s protest is multi-party and will include leaders of various political parties across the spectrum coming together in support of the Palestinian people. National leaders of the ANC, NFP, UDM, AIC, EFF and Al Jaamah political parties (among others) will be in attendance and addressing today’s protest.

Some of the confirmed speakers who are to address the protest march include ANC NEC Member and Chairperson of the ANC’s International Relations committee Cde Lindiwe Zulu (also South Africa’s Minister for Social Development), ANC Provincial Executive Committee member Cde Thomas Mxolisi Kaunda (also the Executive Mayor of Durban), Chief Zwelivelile Mandla Mandela (Royal House of Mandela and also South African Member of Parliament), Reverend Ntuthuko Nkosi of the Lutheran Church (and also a leader in Kairos Southern Africa), Bram Hanekom (Board Member of Africa4Palestine), Embassy of Palestine and others including the leadership of COSATU and SACP.

This past month, in 11 days, the Israeli regime killed over 230 people including more than 65 children. Among those murdered were 3 pregnant women – 1 who was 8 months pregnant. The pain of the Palestinian orphan, widow or parent who has lost a family member is our pain.

Today’s protest march is organized by a diverse group of civil society organizations, churches, mosques, progressive Jewish organizations and others including the Lajpal Foundation, Radio Al Ansaar, Muslim Relief Agency, KZN PSF, Youth 4 Palestine, and several political parties.

Members of the media are invited to attend today’s protest as well as the other activities taking place across South Africa in solidarity with the Palestinian people. This weekend there are events in Cape Town (Sea Point and Salt River), Polokwane, Thohoyandou, Ladysmith, Gqeberha, Johannesburg, Pretoria and elsewhere.
