In 24 hrs over 5000 South Africans endorse petition calling on Miss SA to withdraw from Israel

PRESS STATEMENT:  In 24 hours over 5000 South Africans endorse petition demanding Miss SA withdraw from Miss Universe
11 November 2021
Yesterday a petition by the human rights organisation #Africa4Palestine was launched calling on South Africans to support the calls for the CEO of Miss South Africa, Ms Stephanie Weil, to withdraw the Miss South Africa organisation from the Israeli Apartheid hosted Miss Universe pageant due to take place next month. In less than 24 hours, over 5000 South Africans signed the petition, including several high profile influencers. From all accounts, South Africans are clear – they do not want to be associated with Israeli Apartheid nor the regime’s upcoming hosting of Miss Universe.
The outpouring of support for Miss South Africa to not go to Apartheid Israel must not be arrogantly dismissed by the CEO of the entity, Ms Stephanie Weil. Stephanie Weil must not insult nor provoke South Africans by referring to our calls and those of others as that of a small group or a “fringe”. By now it is undeniable that these calls are from the vast majority of South Africans – including civil society, human rights groups, influencers, media personalities, trade unions, political parties and others who have all come out calling on Miss SA to withdraw participation. These groups include: the Royal House of Mveso, YH4P, KZN PSF, Y4P, PSA, COSATU, ANCWL, YCLSA, EFF, Aljamah and many other groups across the country.
If the Miss South Africa CEO continues insisting on travelling to the Apartheid State of Israel, then the Miss South Africa organisation will irreversibly lose its legitimacy and respect in South African society. The Miss South Africa brand is being tarnished by the day as the entity ignores the history of South Africa and the people, by disregarding the suffering of Palestinians and by dismissing its own supporters who have urged the company to do the right thing and not endorse the Apartheid State of Israel.
Miss South Africa’s CEO, the organisation and their current queen (Ms Lalela Mswame) will not be travelling to Israel as Ambassadors for South Africa or as representatives of its people. Instead they will be representing themselves and “an independent organisation/company, privately owned and run by Miss Stephanie Weil”. The brand would have lost all legitimacy and public appeal.
We urge the organization – Miss South Africa – to respect the overwhelming call by South Africans. To view the petition click here: https://www.change.org/p/miss-south-africa-ceo-stephanie-weil-miss-south-africa-must-withdraw-from-israel-pageant
