Legal heavy-weight & anti apartheid activist resigns from pro-Israel organization following Miss Universe debacle

PRESS STATEMENT: South African legal heavy-weight and anti apartheid activist resigns from pro-Israel organization following Miss Universe debacle

The human rights organization #Africa4Palestine welcomes the resignation of legal heavyweight and anti-apartheid activist, Willie Hofmeyr, from the pro-Israeli outfit called “Citizens for Integrity”.

It is this (practically, now, a one-person) “organisation” that went to court demanding that the South African Government supports Miss SA on a trip to Apartheid Israel. Last week, in a defeat for the Israeli lobby, the High Court of South Africa struck the case off the roll. “Citizens for Integrity” is led by one of the founders of the South African Friends of Israel (SAFI), Mr Mark Hyman (SAFI’s sole purpose is to normalize Israeli Apartheid & the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians). The same person, Mark Hyman, is now effectively the entire “Citizens for Integrity” organization.

Hofmeyr’s resignation from “Citizens for Integrity’ follows engagements with activists who had reached out to Hofmeyr. We thank Comrade Willie for his graciousness and willingness to engage.

Finally, Willie Hofmeyer has categorically denied that a recent statement, demanding an apology from South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation (comrade Nathi Mthethwa), emanates from him. It was released without his knowledge or permission.

ABOUT WILLIE HOFMEYER: Willie Hofmeyer was active in the movement to abolish apartheid during which he was detained without trial on several occasions and held in solitary confinement (once for over six months).

After the end of Apartheid, Hofmeyer served for 5 years as a South African Parliamentarian in the government of President Nelson Mandela. During this time he served as the Chairperson of the Constitutional Assembly committee that drafted the country’s new Constitution.

Thereafter, following his time in parliament, Willie Hofmeyer served for over two decades at South Africa’s National Prosecutions Authority (NPA) where he headed, among others, the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) and the Special Investigations Unit. He was the longest-serving Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions, having been appointed by President Thabo Mbeki in 2001. In this role he fought against organised crime, drug-related crime, serious violent crime and serious economic crime and corruption.

He continues to be actively engaged in the struggle to defend our democracy and fight corruption.
