PRESS STATEMENT: Over 35 organisations support upcoming Johannesburg protest 4 Palestine

12 April 2023

Over 35 South African organisations, trade unions, women’s groups, youth formations and political parties have endorsed the upcoming protest rally for Palestine taking place this Friday (14 April) at 14h00 in Johannesburg (Joburg City Council, 163 Civic Boulevard, Braamfontein, Johannesburg).

South Africans from various walks of life and political formations will be gathering in protest against the most recent Israeli attacks on Palestinian worshippers.

Since last week’s violent escalation of aggression by Israel against Palestinian worshippers at the Al Aqsa compound, things have only worsened. Yesterday Israeli forces shot and killed a 16-year-old Palestinian teenager Mohammad Fayez Balhan in Jericho. His father told reporters: “I went to help a wounded person, and when I reached him I realised it was my son. They shot him in the head, the shoulder, and the stomach.” Balhan is the 18th Palestinian child to be killed by Israel in 2023 alone.

Friday’s picket in Johannesburg has been endorsed by, among others: Africa4Palestine, Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Al Ansaar Foundation, Al Jamaah Political Party, Al Quds Foundation, ANC, ANC Women’s League, ANC Youth League, Association of Muslim Accountants and Lawyers (AMAL), Communist Party of Swaziland (CPS), Communication Workers Union of South Africa (CWU), Congress of South African Students (Cosas), Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), Ex-Political Prisoners Association (EPPA-SA), Friends of Cuba Society (FOCUS), FYMO, Gauteng Fed Legends, Good Party, IPCI, Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMA-SA), Kairos Southern Africa, KZN PSF, Palestine Solidarity Committee (Ladysmith), Masjidul Quds Institute, Media Review Network (MRN), Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa (MJC), Muslim Youth Movement, NC4P, NEHAWU, National Freedom Party (NFP), PMB 4 Palestine, POPCRU, Progressive Tamil Movement (PTM), People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO), Rustenburg PSF, South African Communist Party (SACP), South African Students Congress (SASCO), SAMNET, Swaziland Solidarity Network (SSN), UJ PSF, Uwais Qarni Center, Women’s Cultural Group, YCL, Young Hearts 4 Palestine, Youth 4 Al Quds (SA), Youth 4 Palestine and others. If your organization would like to participate and endorse this protest please send an email to info@africa4palestine.com

This Friday’s protest in Johannesburg is part of a larger global outrage against Israel’s most recent violent escalation and aggression. The upcoming Johannesburg protest 4 Palestine follows other similar actions that have taken place this last week in Minnesota, Manama, Chicago, London, New York, Tetouan, Manchester City, Boston, Los Angeles, Vienna, Dallas, Detroit, Sana’a, Dublin and elsewhere.

Israel’s crimes will not be carried out under the cloak of darkness anymore. The Israeli regime is being exposed for the Apartheid state that it is. And it will be held accountable by the international community for its violations of international law and human rights abuses.

Finally, the protestors, activists and community members who will be gathering on Friday 14 April 2023 will also submit a memorandum to the City of Johannesburg to demand and contribute to the public participation needed for the renaming of Sandton Drive to Leila Khaled Drive.
