#Africa4Palestine joins civil society in defense of Sheikh Riad Fataar, President of the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), following baseless accusations of anti-Semitism by the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD). He is the latest targeted of SAJBD’s baseless allegations of anti-Semitism aimed to silence legitimate criticism of the Israeli government and its policies.
Sheikh Riad Fataar, exercising his constitutional right to free speech, spoke out in support of the Palestinian resistance and expressed his stance against the atrocities being committed against the people of Gaza. For this, he has been unfairly targeted and defamed. His words were grounded by the principles of human rights and justice, reflecting the global outcry against Israeli apartheid and the ongoing genocide. The consistent labelling of any such criticisms as "anti-Semitic" undermines genuine dialogue and detracts from the real fight against hatred.
The term "anti-Semitism" has a vital and specific meaning, referring to discrimination against Jewish people. SAJBD now instead uses it as a form of defamation recklessly trying to shut down voices that condemn Israeli government policies against Palestinians. This tactic is both reckless and irresponsible.
South Africa recognizes Hamas as a legitimate political organization in the Palestinian liberation struggle. Supporting the Palestinian cause or calling for the end of the suffering inflicted upon Palestinians does not equate to endorsing terrorism. It is a call for justice and dignity for a people under occupation.
#Africa4Palestine commends the MJC for standing firm in opposition to the apartheid policies of the Israeli government. Attempts to silence critical voices using false accusations of anti-Semitism is no longer going to go unquestioned and will never succeed.
We commend Sheikh Riad Fataar’s tireless work, not only for Palestine but for vulnerable communities in the Western Cape, showing his dedication to justice on many fronts.
Let us continue to stand united against tyranny, and in solidarity with the people of Palestine, as we strive for a world free from oppression, apartheid, and injustice.
