Africa4Palestine strongly condemns the malicious and defamatory attacks made by former Jewish Board of Deputies Pretoria chairperson Lawrence Nowosenetz against Dr Imtiaz Sooliman. These unfounded accusations of terrorism reflect a disturbing trend aimed at targeting individuals and organisations that advocate for Palestinian rights and confront the ongoing atrocities in Gaza.
While we are not aware of any relationship Dr Sooliman has with Hamas, such attacks are also attempts to manipulate public perception, aligning with the Israeli and American narratives that label Hamas and other groups as terrorist organisations—a stance not embraced by South Africa.
It is particularly insulting that these allegations come from Lawrence Nowosenetz, who resides in Tel Aviv and openly supports Israel’s daily acts of terrorism and the genocide in Gaza.
Dr Sooliman’s humanitarian work through Gift of the Givers over the past three decades embodies the compassion and solidarity we desperately need in these times. Efforts to discredit him are part of a broader campaign to silence voices advocating against injustice and genocide. Dr Sooliman owes no explanation to Israel or its lobbists, nor does any organisation hosting Dr Sooliman.
We support the Helen Suzman Foundation in its decision to host Dr Sooliman, resisting pressure from the Zionist lobby. While we don’t think that Helen Suzman herself supported Palestine, the Foundation and its current leadership’s resilience against Zionist intimidation is a significant move that should be supported by all progressive forces.
As advocates for justice, Africa4Palestine stands firm against any efforts to delegitimise and isolate those who work tirelessly for the rights of Palestinians and other oppressed communities.
