INVITE: INVITE – Dialogue with South African and Palestinian Doctors on Mental Health, Oppression and Freedom

Members of the medical fraternity, mental health sector, media and of the public are invited to a public dialogue with visiting Palestinian health expert Dr Samah Jabr and the South African Provincial Minister of Health, Dr Bandile Masuku.

Palestinian Doctor: Dr Samah Jabr is a Palestinian Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist. She is also the Head of the Mental Health Unit in the Palestinian Ministry of Health and is an Assistant Clinical Professor at George Washington University in the USA. Inspired by anti-colonial psychiatrist Frantz Fanon, her areas of interest include mental health, colonialism and universal human rights. She has written extensively about the psychological consequences of the Israeli occupation in Palestine and is featured in the award winning 2017 film “Beyond the Frontlines” that was recently screened at the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival. South African Doctor: Dr Bandile Masuku is currently serving in the Government of Gauteng as MEC for Health. Masuku, a healthcare activist, obtained his first medical qualification in 2004 after graduating with a MBCHB from Medunsa. He went on to the Fellowship College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Wits University, where he was further conferred with a Master’s degree. Masuku has served in various positions within the medical field such as Medical Officer, Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital; Registrar/Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Wits University); Consultant: Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Pholosong Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital; and Head of Clinical Unit (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) at Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital (TMRH). Masuku has also served as the National President of the South African Students Congress (the continent’s largest student movement) and was previously elected as National Spokesperson and National Policy Coordinator of the ANC Youth League.
