The human rights NGO, Africa4Palestine, congratulates South Africa’s governing party, the African National Congress (ANC), on the successful convening of its 6th National Policy Conference (NPC).
The ANC’s held its 6th National Policy Conference this past weekend in Johannesburg. Representatives from all corners of South Africa gathered and held vibrant and peaceful debates on a variety of issues – including international relations.
The ANC’s 6th National Policy Conference reaffirmed the previous 54th National Conference resolution on South Africa downgrading relations with Israel. In 2017, at the ANC’s 54th National Conference, the ANC resolved to downgrade South Africa’s Embassy in Israel to a Liaison Office. South Africa subsequently withdrew its Ambassador to Israel and has not replaced him with another one since. South Africa presently does not have an Ambassador in Tel Aviv – sends a clear message to Israel that we cannot have normal relations with an abnormal state.
In addition, ANC members, noting Israel’s increasing Apartheid policies, also resolved in the international relations commission to support the call on South Africa to use the International Criminal Court to assist the Palestinians in holding Israel accountable for its violations of international law.
These and other positions in solidarity with the Palestinians were adopted unanimously – showing an incredible unity and support to the Palestinians who are waging a heroic battle against Apartheid Israel.
The conference also supported the calls for the lifting of the punitive and cruel sanctions against Venezuela, Iran, Cuba, Syria and elsewhere where such sanctions have been imposed unilaterally and unjustly.
Finally, the ANC NPC expressed its unwavering backing of the people of eSwatini and Western Sahara as well as other Africans and all other oppressed peoples of the world.
Africa4Palestine commends the ANC for their ongoing campaigns of solidarity and we re-commit to continue to work with the ANC and the Alliance, as well as with the South African government in giving practical support and solidarity to the people of Palestine.
